This section of IEC 60947 pertains to switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors, and fuse-combination units intended for use in distribution and motor circuits, with a rated voltage not exceeding 1,000 V a.c. or 1,500 V d.c. The manufacturer is required to specify the type, ratings, and characteristics of any incorporated fuses in accordance with the relevant standards.
This section does not apply to equipment covered by IEC 60947-2, IEC 60947-4-1, and IEC 60947-5-1. However, if switches and fuse-combination units within the scope of this section are used to start, accelerate, and/or stop a single motor, they must also meet the additional requirements outlined in Annex A.
Annex C includes requirements for single-pole operated three-pole switches. Any auxiliary switches attached to equipment within this section must comply with the requirements of IEC 60947-5-1. Additionally, this section does not encompass the extra requirements needed for electrical equipment intended for explosive gas atmospheres.
NOTE 1: Depending on their design, switches (or disconnectors) may be referred to as “rotary switches (disconnectors),” “cam-operated switches (disconnectors),” “knife switches (disconnectors),” etc.
NOTE 2: In this section, the term “switch” also refers to devices known in French as “commutateurs,” which are designed to modify connections between multiple circuits and, among other functions, to replace one part of a circuit with another.
NOTE 3: Generally, throughout this section, switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors, and fuse-combination units are collectively referred to as “equipment.”
The purpose of this section is to define:
a) the characteristics of the equipment;
b) the conditions that the equipment must meet regarding:
- operation and performance under normal conditions;
- operation and performance under specified abnormal conditions, such as short circuits;
- dielectric properties;
c) the tests required to verify compliance with these conditions and the methods for conducting these tests;
d) the information that must be marked on the equipment or provided by the manufacturer, such as in the product catalog.
