This section of IEC 60384 pertains to fixed capacitors equipped with metallized electrodes and a polypropylene dielectric, which are intended for use in electronic devices. These capacitors may exhibit “self-healing” characteristics under certain usage conditions. They are primarily designed for use with direct voltage. Capacitors for alternating voltage and pulse applications are not within the scope of this standard; instead, they are addressed in IEC 60384-17.
The maximum power that can be applied to these capacitors is 500 var at a frequency of 50 Hz, and the maximum peak voltage is 2,500 V. The standard covers two performance grades of capacitors: Grade 1 for long-life applications and Grade 2 for general use.
Capacitors designed for electromagnetic interference suppression are not included in this standard, but are covered under IEC 60384-14. Additionally, capacitors intended for electrical shock hazard protection (as covered by IEC 60065) and fluorescent lamp and motor capacitors (as covered by IEC Technical Committee 33 and IEC Technical Committee 34) are not included in this standard.
