This international standard addresses the safety of electrically powered commercial hot cupboards that are not designed for domestic use. The rated voltage for these appliances is not to exceed 250 V for single-phase units connected between a phase and neutral, and 480 V for other types of appliances.
NOTE 101 These appliances are commonly employed in establishments such as restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, and similar commercial entities.
The electrical components of appliances that utilize alternative energy sources are also covered by this standard.
To the extent feasible, this standard addresses the common hazards associated with these categories of appliances.
NOTE 102 It is highlighted that:
- For appliances intended for use in vehicles, on ships, or aircraft, supplementary requirements may be mandatory;
- In numerous countries, additional criteria are set forth by national health agencies, labor protection authorities, national water supply agencies, and similar organizations;
- For appliances meant for outdoor use, additional requirements might be necessary.
NOTE 103 This standard does not cover:
- Appliances designed solely for industrial applications;
- Appliances intended for use in environments with exceptional conditions, such as the presence of corrosive or explosive atmospheres (dust, vapors, or gases);
- Continuous process appliances used for the mass production of food.
