IEC 60172:2015 specifies, in accordance with the provisions of IEC 60216-1, a method for assessing the temperature index of enamelled wire, whether varnished or unvarnished with an impregnating agent, as well as tape-wrapped round and rectangular wire, in air at atmospheric pressure. This is achieved by periodically monitoring changes in response to AC proof voltage tests. This procedure is not applicable to fiber-insulated wire or wire covered with tapes that contain inorganic fibers.
NOTE: The data obtained from this testing procedure provide designers and development engineers with valuable information for selecting winding wire for further evaluation of insulation systems and equipment testing.
