IEC 60422:2013 provides guidance on the oversight and upkeep of the quality of insulating oil within electrical equipment. It is applicable to mineral insulating oils that were originally supplied in compliance with IEC 60296, and is intended for use in transformers, switchgear, and other electrical equipment where oil sampling is feasible and under the normal operating conditions as specified in the equipment’s specifications.
The standard is designed to aid power equipment operators in assessing the oil’s condition and ensuring it remains in a serviceable state. It also establishes a general framework for developing more detailed and comprehensive local codes of practice.
It encompasses recommendations for testing and evaluation processes and describes methods for the reconditioning and recovery of oil, as well as the decontamination of oil that has been contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
NOTE: The monitoring of the condition of electrical equipment, such as through the analysis of dissolved gases, furanic compounds, or other methods, is not within the scope of this standard.
